We went to see hedgehogs, which sadly are not terribly friendly. Russian hedgehogs are solitary animals, meeting for little else than mating; mothers do not care for their young for long, and hedgehogs do not hunt or travel in groups. Without a social hierarchy into which humans can insert themselves, hedgehogs are much less suitable to domestication than cats, dogs, horses, elephants, and the like. Hedgehogs are also nocturnal and do not like being woken during (human) daytime at all. They move surprisingly quickly given their size, and if touched or handled, they will attempt to impale and/or bite the intruder. Imagine a cross between a wild mouse and a cactus:
